If you’re a fan, you already know that James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo are the current members of the smash hits band Metallica. Did you know that former members included Ron McGovney, Dave Mustaine, Cliff Burton and Jason Newsted. Now you do. Metallica has been delighting audiences since 1981 when this heavy metal band first formed in Los Angeles, California. Also recognized for their skills in thrash metal, hard rock and speed metal, Metallica got its start when Ulrich posted an advertisement in his local paper.

Whether you appreciate the group most for their earlier releases that included aggressive tempos and fast instrumentals or are more of a fan of their newer releases, there’s no question that Metallica has played their way to the top in the underground music community as well has hitting the top of the charts with their 1991 self-titled album. Their prior album Master of Puppets had already thrust Metallica into the limelight in 1986 and received critical acclaim as one of the most influential heavy thrash metal albums.

To date, Metallica has won nine Grammy Awards. This successful band has sold more than 100 million records around the world with the release of their album Death Magnetic. With two live albums, nine studio albums, forty-five singles, two EPs and twenty-four music videos, Metallica has shined in the star light of having five consecutive albums to make their debut at number one on Billboard 200. Tragedy struck Metallica when Burton was killed in a freak bus accident where other members of the band only sustained minor injuries. It was a devastating blow but after Burton’s family gave their blessings, approximately 40 people tried out as a replacement before newcomer Newsted joined the band.

In May, 2009, Metallica was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. By this time, Newsted had left the band and been replaced by Trujillo. Both Newsted and Trujillo performed on stage and Burton’s father was on hand to receive this prestigious award in his son’s honor. In November, 2009, Metallica was on hand to perform at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s two-night series of concerts that were held at Madison Square Garden in New York.

True to the excitement that Metallica always creates at a concert, the band performed Sweet Jane with Lou Reed, All Day and All of the Night with Ray Davies, Iron man/Paranoid with Ozzy Osborne and outstanding renditions of For Whom the Bells Toll and Enter Sandman. HBO was on hand to record every step of the journey with Metallica for this fantastic event so you can expect the program to air on cable.

Currently, the World Magnet Tour lives up to its name in every sense of the word. Since January, Metallica has performed to sold out crowds across the United States and around the world. From the first concert, which was performed on January 12 at Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to their recent November 15 performances at Madison Square Garden in New York, New York fans everywhere have been snatching up tickets to see and hear this band perform live.

The World Magnet Tour continues through the end of 2009 with many venues already sold out for shows scheduled at Mandalay Bay in Vegas, Idaho Center in Boise, ARCO Arena in Sacramento, Honda Center in Anaheim and HP Pavilion in San Jose. With some much deserved time off for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, fans can expect Metallica to return to the tour circuit on January 19, 2010 when they’ll be performing at Estadio San Marcos in Lima, Peru. From there, it’s no stopping Metallica as they venture to Santiago (Chile), Porto Alegre (Brazil), Guadalajara and Monterrey (Mexico), Guatemala City (Guatemala), San Jose (Costa Rica), Panama City (Panama), Bogota (Columbia), Caracas (Venezula), San Juan (Puerto Rick), Oslo (Norway), Riga (Latvia), Vilnius (Lithuania), Moscow (Russia) and Belfast (N. Ireland).

The shining star in the prime running events at the 2008 USATF National Masters Meet in Spokane (WA) was Kathryn (Kathy) Martin, who won 5 national titles in the 800, 1500, 5000 and 10,000-meter races, and set an American record in the 2000-meter steeplechase. The 56-year-old from Northport (NY) was virtually unstoppable in the 55-59 age-group competition.

The United States Track & Field-sanctioned meet was held Aug. 7-10 at the Spokane Falls Community College track, one of the finestif not the finestdedicated track venues among community colleges in the nation. Most tracks are built around a more popular sporting venue, such as football. At Spokane Falls Community College it is clear that track and field competition is a prime concern.

Kathy Martin won the 5 titles in 4 days battling 90-degree-plus temperatures at Spokane’s 2,000-plus-foot elevation with dry heat and no humidity.

Her closest race was the 800 which she won in 2:38.56 with runner-up Coreen Steinbach of Pompey (NY) less than a second behind. Martin’s biggest margin of victory came in the 5000, which she won in 19:09.20, nearly 2 minutes ahead of her nearest competitor.

Martin’s two signature racesthe 1500 and 10,000left little doubt about who was in charge on the track. She won the 10,000 in 41:13.60, slower than her American age-group record of 39:37.78 set last year. She also holds the current national record of 37:12.23 set in 2004 in the 50-54 age-group.

Martin, who resembles a very fast perpetual motion machine, ran away from her competition in the 1500, winning in 5:13.49 by more than 12+ seconds and with a time less than a second slower than her current American record of 5:12.62 set last year. She also holds the current national record of 4:52.55 set in 2002 in the 50-54 age-group.

The icing on her 5-layer cake came in her apparent first-time try at the 2000-meter steeplechase as she set a national record in 8:23.20, demolishing Marie Michelsohn’s 7-year-old mark of 8:37.7 set in 2001. Kathy Martin is an inspiring running machine who continues to rank as one of America’s top middle-distance runners in masters competition.

Three other competitors, including two American-record holders, were double winners in the prime running events at the meet.

Stephen Robbins of Seattle won the 65-69 age-group 100 in 12.56 and set a new American record in the 200 in 25.36, breaking Paul Johnson’s mark of 25.76 set in 2001. Robbins set the current 100 American record (pending) of 12.37 earlier in August.

Nolan Shaheed of Pasadena, CA (55-59) won the 1500 in 4:44.38 and the 5000 in 17:00.60. Shaheed holds the same age-group American record of 4:20.76 set in 2004. Nolan Shaheed also holds the world masters record of 4:27.9 in the mile for the 50-54 age-group, which he set in 2000.

Don Coffman of Stamping Ground, KY (65-69) was the third double-winner, taking the 5000 in 19:10.26 and the 10,000 in 39:16.00, a full 6+ minutes faster than his nearest competitor.

Other notable age-group performances included:

Aaron Thigpen of Brentwood, CA (40-44) with a 11.00 in the 100. Renee Henderson of Merchantville, NJ (40-44) with a 12.31 in the 100. Lonnie Hooker of Upper Marlboro, MD (45-49) with a 22.58 in the 200. Jai Black of San Diego, CA (45-49) with a 1:02.15 in the 400. Courtney Muhammad of Mesa, AZ (45-49) with a 51.41 in the 400. Neil Fitzgerald of New York, NY (40-44) with a 1:59.51 in the 800.

James Morton of Springfield, MA (50-54) with a 2:04.89 in the 800. Lisa Valle of Albuquerque, NM (40-44) with a 2:20.35 in the 800. Jim Selby of Fallbrook, CA (80-84) with a 3:19.10 in the 800. Kevin Forde of Philadelphia, PA (40-44) with a 4:10.78 in the 1500. Christine Olen of Boise, ID (40-44) with a 4:53.50 in the 1500. Mike Stickley of Winchester, VA (45-49) with a 16:10.70 in the 5000. Susan Empey of Mercer Island, WA (40-44) with an 18:17.47 in the 5000.

Richard Becker of Selah, WA (50-54) with a 34:22.94 in the 10,000. Alyssa Tower of Vancouver, WA (45-49) with a 38:21.83 in the 10,000. BODYBUILDING aficionados are faced with another controversy which may soon transform into another blocking force in their agenda which is to get their discipline into the elite list of legitimate sports.

In what appears to be an addition to what is already a long list of their problems, the Bodybuilding sector is linked into the use of dietary supplement products reported earlier as containing steroids.

In fact, the United States Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) recently made an announcement recalling 65 dietary supplement products. Specifically recalled are those that are being sold online by a bodybuilding website.

Who is liable?

Most of those that the US FDA is running after are marketed online by the Bodybuilding.com, a website entirely and comprehensively devoted for bodybuilding enthusiasts. According to the US government drug agency, those products sold online at the Bodybuilding.com website might be containing steroids.

Specifically under close watch are those which were manufactured by BrainQuicken LLC Research and Technologies or simply LLC. LLC is a subsidiary of Adaptagenix Applied Biosciences of Boise, Idaho. It is likewise considered as a top investment entity engaged in the development and distribution of bioactive and pharmaceutical-grade neural acceleration products.

Should the drugs sold online be found positive of steroid, the US FDA has yet to make any pronouncement on their next legal step.  Moreover, there isn’t any word as to whose liability would it be. It could be the liability of the website that plays the crucial role of selling it via the net. There is however a higher probability that LLC would face prosecution — or it could be both.

Steroid what?

Steroid and steroid use is a frequent headline grabber in the major dailies.  Careers of not a few world-class athletes were cut short for steroid use. Most of those who got themselves a free publicity for the use of steroids were those who are considered as already popular.

Steroid is a regulated substance.  It is described as performance-enhancing drug that is widely being taken by athletes all over the world, despite a ban on its use.  Use of steroids is considered as cheating in many sports disciplines and sporting events.

Findings show that use of steroids and other medical or dietary products containing steroids causes acute liver ailments, male infertility and makes one vulnerable to heart attack or stroke, which could result in death.

Soon after the FDA announcement, the website (Bodybuilding.com) officials have already made a statement, apparently caving in to the drug agency’s request for a voluntary recall of sold dietary products online and pull-out of the advertisement and marketing. They however made it clear that those dietary products that they are selling online are legally classified under the federal laws as “dietary supplements”.

The FDA has yet to make a final statement as to whether the recalled drugs indeed contain steroids.

Bodybuilding dragged into it

As a result of this development, Bodybuilding has been dragged into the controversy and bodybuilding aficionados are just not too happy about it.

The controversy might just make it a lot harder for them to convince international sporting organizations into agreeing to their request to consider the muscle discipline as a legitimate sporting event. GP

Though many of us can’t even remember it now, there was a time where one had to be in front of a TV to watch a sporting event, live concert, political event or even a full TV show. And, just a decade ago, if you moved out of a city you would never get to hear your favorite radio station ever again. This was only ten years ago, but it feels like a lifetime ago.

Streaming internet has changed the way we watch the world around us. Here are a few examples of how these advancements have changed how we live our life:

TV Shows While it still might not be replacing watching it on live, or as some people have come to prefer, on DVR, full length TV episodes have begun to catch on online. Websites like Myspace.com, Youtube.com and Hulu.com have partnered with specific networks and TV shows to show new (and old) episodes in their entirety to viewers. Internet and network specific advertisements are included in these shows so networks are able to get their advertising revenue even online. Compared to radio and live news events, full TV shows are a relatively new technology to hit the internet so it will be interesting to see where this it goes in the next few years.

Radio Radio stations were one of the big winners of high speed internet as they are now able to broadcast anywhere in the world. Thousands of stations now transmit around the world so people looking to hear talk radio from Boise, ID can hear it in Paris, France, or those wanting to hear a rock station from Iceland can hear it in Vancouver, Canada. It used to be that one of the hardships of moving out of the city you grew up in was not getting to hear your favorite radio stations anymore. Now all you need is an internet connection and you can hear it anywhere in the world.

Sports About a decade ago someone came up with the brilliant idea of having pay-per-view packages where you could watch every pro football or college football game from your TV no matter where you live. Now, this popular endeavor has been expanded to the internet where, for a price, you can watch just about any sporting event live on your computer. It’s the same idea as with the internet radio: no matter where you are, no matter what your team you root for, you can see them on your computer. Any sports fan will tell you this is a very welcome idea.

Politics One of the first realms to benefit from the live streaming video revolution is news. News networks first began putting video reports out for the viewers to watch online, and then gradually began to stream live events and news reports on their sites. This both benefited and bemused politicians as now their best, and worst, moments are available for the world to see at the push of a button. Sound bites have now given way to full speeches and round the clock coverage which is available to potential voters around the world. To put it in literary themes, for politicians it is the best of times and the worst of times with live streaming video.

Author Kim Green gets most of her information using high speed internet to watch videos streamed.

There were already some people who were anticipating the entry of the TCU Horned Frogs in the Bowl Championship Series. It was actually the possibility of having five teams whose performances earned them slots in the top 25 to be in the BCS. It would have lent more credence and respect to the mid-majors.
Unfortunately this will not be true anymore since Texas Christian University and Boise State University will be part of the Poinsettia Bowl. Ohio State will meet with Texas in the Fiesta Bowl while Texas will battle with Ole Miss at the Cotton Bowl.

Several scenarios come to mind. In the event that Boise State University triumphs, the MWC’s drawing power is lowered and BSU’s glory will just be another notch in a mediocre mid-major while a win by TCU will be dismissed as a fluke attributed the BSU weak schedule. Whichever case comes out, the prospect is not really that good.
Other scenario would be for Brigham Young University probable win over Arizona with the latter being one of the Pac ? 10 contenders. Such a win will give BYU some recognition very similar to what happened way back in 2004 Utah triumph over Pitt.

Some would like to Boise State U beat a team from Maryland in the Humanitarian Bowl than witnessing a game between them and Texas Christian University Horned Frogs. This is more on the desire for BSU to have a successful season and play alongside with TCU.

The Texas Christian University Horned Frogs would make an interesting game if they are pitted against another team from the BCS when and if they play in the Poinsettia Bowl. Those are the games worth watching and looked forward to.

What makes the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs a team to watch out for?

They have several seniors who are in their final season and with their passion and fervor alone, they can make a big difference on how the TCU Horned Frogs do during the game.

Then, there are the players who have made vital contributions in the past and were instrumental in propelling the Frogs to where they are now. These include Stephen Hodge and Blake Schlueter.

Hodge has made it before to the All-Mountain West Conference Selection and played very well in the past seasons and was the leading player for defensive backs in the nation way back in 2007.
Blake Schlueter, in his case, made it to the All-Mountain West Conference Selection three times and he made a difference in the offensive line of the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs.

Gary Patterson, the TCU head coach, played a critical role as he led the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs to a winning streak which resulted to the team’s being in the forefront and vying for a bowl. Will the team ultimately have a bowl under his helm?

What is left now is to see if the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs will continue the spectacular performance which made them a worthy contender despite starting the year at rank 11.
